Interview with Carlos Perez

Carlos Perez was part of the 2008 Cup Winners’ Cup victory against Löwen, but he will face the “Lions” as the assistant coach of Telekom Veszprém. We asked Charlie about that Cup Winners’ Cup final and also about the upcoming clash in the weekend.

A game against Löwen can bring out good memories for you, because you have celebrated one of the biggest achievement in Club’s history against them in 2008 in the Cup Winners’ Cup final. How do you remember that game?

It was a great match because although Löwen was a young team, they played very well. I can remember that almost everyone performed well from our team, like Eklemovic or Peric. The second-leg was very difficult, but we managed to beat them at home. We were lucky because even though we were eliminated from the Champions League, we could still continue in a European Cup series, what we could win eventually.

Those former teams have two representatives today, you as the assistant coach of Veszprém, and Oliver Roggisch, who is also in the staff of Löwen. What kind of player was he, how did you feel playing against him?

He was a tough guy, I got some big slaps from him. Roggisch was a tough defender and I only saw him in a similar position like mine a few weeks ago. It was hard to play against him, because he was an outstanding player, he was also part of the German national team a lot of times. I had a good relationship with him as a player, but as a person, I do not know him very much. Only on the court.

How do you feel in your new position at the Club?

I would be lying if I said I had not dreamt about this opportunity. Everybody who played here such a long time would like to be a head coach or even as an assistant coach of this Club one day. This is a huge step for me, and I am trying to learn as much as possible from David David just as I tried to learn from István Gulyás or Csaba Tombor at the youth system. This position is new for me, but I am trying to learn more and more day by day, and of course I am trying to help as much as possible.

How do you see the preparation of the team for Löwen?

The players need time to learn this new system of coach Davis. I was angry a lot on the game against Szeged. We looked back the game tapes and although we played well, we got tired for the last 20 minutes and missed clear chances. Training is going well for the boys this week, I feel like they are fresher, they run a lot and the atmosphere is also great in the locker room.

What do you expect from Saturday’s game?

Nothing else is expectable than victory. For this I think our Fans will be up to help.
