If there was a half in which a team truly played the role of a “doctor of the soul,” it was the first period of our match against Füchse Berlin. Because bang-bang - after three and a half minutes, we were already down 5–1. Three shots were stopped by Dejan Milosavljev, while everything went in at the other end - not the kind of start we had dreamed of.
After that, both teams settled into their cruising speed, and the home side generally led by three or four goals. Although our defense gradually came together, there were too many mistakes in attack, so we had no real chance to close the gap. From Milosavljev’s saves, Füchse scored four easy goals in the first twenty minutes, and even a timeout couldn’t break our six-minute scoring drought. At 17–11, the Berlin side still had a six-goal lead when they got another psychological boost.
Only for us! They had possession to go seven ahead, but Lasse Andersson launched a shot from his own half (nothing special, they had two players running), which missed. From that, we produced a 4–0 run until halftime - though with a sacrifice. Luka Cindric scored from a breakthrough, but after a bad step he injured his left ankle and had to leave the court with assistance. Still, Yanis Lenne and Ivan Martinovic both scored into an empty net, and the Croatian back added another from open play, so we went into the break at 17–15. Andersson’s shot, meanwhile, only dropped into our goal milliseconds after the buzzer…
The second half is hard to describe. An emotional rollercoaster, drama upon drama, and an incredible display of willpower - from both sides. There was no magic like a week ago at the One Veszprém Arena, but in terms of fight and suffering, this match will be hard to surpass. It started with goals from the two French wings, Hugo Descat and Lenne, making it 17–17. For the first time since 1–1, it was level!
After that, Füchse went one or two goals ahead, and we usually managed to fight back to a draw. Rodrigo Corrales made some brilliant saves from open play, Mikael Appelgren stopped two penalties, and up front Ahmed Hesham finally found his range. Even so, we entered the last ten minutes one goal down - mainly because the Berliners increasingly put the ball in the hands of Mathias Gidsel.
In fact, the next two attacks went the same way, making it 27–24 after 51 minutes. From there, it became 28–27 after a brilliant goal by Hesham. Another exchange of goals (Martinovic also pulled out something “old-school”), then a great Veszprém defense and a chance to equalize. Hesham to Adel - 29–29, three and a half minutes left!
Not for long, though, as Andersson curled in and the bottom left corner was far too open. Two and a half minutes. Martinovic breaks through, Milosavljev saves, but it’s a penalty. Descat misses - or Milosavljev saves, depending on your perspective. For us, it didn’t matter - it hurt either way. At the other end, Magnus Gröndahl didn’t return the favor: two goals for them, and with a minute and a half left, the deficit was two again.
Reset, one minute. Timeout. Hesham drives through under passive play and scores: 31–30 to them. Twenty-two seconds left - everything comes down to this. Martinovic goes up, gets pushed with two hands, and misses. But there’s a video review. A red card would mean not just a two-minute suspension but also a penalty for us. The Bosnian referees give only two minutes and a free throw after time. Hesham’s shot deflects off the wall and dies in Milosavljev’s hands.
Penalty shootout.
Descat misses in the first pair. Nedim Remili in the third. But Av Teigum does too. Hesham scores, Gröndahl scores. Final round. From us, Ali Zein - goal. From them, Gidsel. He scores.
Füchse Berlin advanced to the Final Four after the penalty shootout.

STATEMENTS Nikolaj Krickau, head coach of Füchse Berlin: "Maximum respect and recognition for the mentality that Veszprém showed over the two matches. It also reflects the work of my colleague, Xavi Pascual. The way they came back into this game is incredible. It’s difficult to get to Cologne, but fortunately some of my players were in top form today. Luck was on our side, and our mentality was also right.’” Xavi Pascual, head coach of One Veszprém: „This is sport. Once again, we delivered an incredible performance against a top team. Last year we were knocked out by one goal, now on penalties. I think we are at their level, maybe just a small step behind. After our mistakes, we stayed calm - that was important. In the last attack, it was crucial that Mathias Gidsel didn’t pass the ball. The referees saw it differently. But this wasn’t about them - it was about sport. Saves, goals, missed penalties - they’re all part of it, and that’s why we love it. That said, I am so, so proud of my team. The guys gave everything, from the first to the last moment - they left it all out there, and they deserve respect.”
Tim Freihöfer, winger of Füchse Berlin: „It’s an incredible feeling! Before the penalties, Magnus Gröndahl came over and said, ‘These are the moments you play for.’ He scored. I scored too, and now we’re heading back to Cologne.”
Mikael Appelgren, goalkeeper of One Veszprém: „It was an incredibly tight match, just like in Veszprém. We showed what we’re made of. We gave Berlin too big an advantage at the start and got a bit tired during the comeback. Small details made the difference, and in a penalty shootout it’s 50–50. I’m very disappointed, but I’m proud of the team. We came very close to the Final Four. We fought Berlin for 120 minutes, and they have the best player in the world, Mathias Gidsel, but going out like this really hurts.”
