Before our Hungarian Cup semifinal against OTP Bank-Pick Szeged, the players shared on the Audi Arena’s big screen what first comes to mind about the clash between the two historic rivals. Many mentioned the tension—and they weren’t wrong this time either—but Yehia ElDeraa summed it up best: “We tear each other apart!” That’s exactly what happened for most of the first thirty minutes. Right from the start, it was clear the semifinal would be a real battle. After five missed attacks and 5:41 minutes, our first goal came from Ahmed Hesham’s shot, by which time Szeged was already leading 2–0.
The match had the kind of frantic intensity worthy of a final. First Ahmed Adel and Gleb Kalarash, then Nedim Remili and Janus Smárason “found each other,” while goals slowly accumulated on both sides. We kept pace mainly thanks to Dragan Pechmalbec, who was clinical with rebounds. Meanwhile, a huge duel developed between Rodrigo Corrales and Mario Sostaric; by halftime, our goalkeeper had made two one-on-one saves and stopped a penalty. At 9–9, the scoreboard was stuck for more than four minutes before Szeged pulled ahead with Smárason scoring into an empty net. Still, goals from Hesham, Kukic, and Lenne ensured the half ended in a draw.
After the break, Bjarki Már Elísson took over, scoring a hat trick, and after his first goal, we led for the first time at 12–11. However, Szeged’s goalkeeper Roland Mikler rediscovered his outstanding first-half form, and our 15–14 lead quickly turned into a 15–18 deficit. With 18 minutes remaining, Xavi Pascual had to call his second timeout. We switched to 7-on-6 play, and Remili scored his first goal, followed by another from Elísson to cut the deficit to one. The frantic pace continued, full of tension, and with 13 minutes left, the score was level again at 20–20 thanks to Elísson’s sixth goal.
Szeged’s 7-on-6 attacks continued to cause problems, and after one missed attack and a save by Thulin, they were suddenly two goals ahead again. But Elísson remained flawless from the line, and Pechmalbec slipped in for an easy chance—within 43 seconds, we were level once more.
From that point, the goals kept coming: Sostaric, Remili, Garciandia, Pechmalbec, and again Sostaric all scored. However, Elísson hit the post, giving Szeged a chance to go two goals up, which they did through Garciandia. Hesham quickly pulled one back, and after a save by Mikael Appelgren, Adel equalized. Then Appelgren raced back in time to stop Kalarash’s empty-net attempt, giving us a chance to take the lead with one minute left. With 31 seconds remaining, Kalarash was sent off for two minutes, and with ten seconds to go, Remili broke through and made it 30–29! Or so we thought—after video review, the referees disallowed the goal for steps, but we kept possession. After a series of fouls, Hesham’s last-second free throw was blocked, sending the match to penalties.
Nerves were stretched to the limit—especially after Descat missed. But no problem: Szeged’s main penalty taker, Sostaric, also missed! Then came the reliable shooters: Elísson, Szilágyi, Remili, Jelinic, Hesham, Frimmel, and Ali Zein all scored. As the tenth shooter, Smárason stepped up—but more importantly, Appelgren stepped in and made the save that sent our team to the final!

When we were three goals down, we didn’t lose our rhythm—we kept going the same way, and it paid off. But the key was luck, which was on our side in the penalty shootout.”

The absence of Richárd Bodó and the injury to Lazar Kukic made the second half especially difficult, but Máté Fazekas showed why he will be a major asset for Szeged and Hungarian handball in the future.”
